Herd Groyne Lighthouse, River Tyne, South Shields.
This very unusual lighthouse resembling a 1940's sci-fi
movie space craft is located on a small groyne in the river mouth
at South Shields.
It was built in 1882 and was at the mouth of the river
before the north and south piers were built. It still acts as a
navigational aid to ships entering the River Tyne.
In the first photo below taken on a very rough day Tynemouth
Lighthouse can be seen to the left with waves breaking over the
pier and on the right, South Shields Lighthouse.
The next three photos were taken from tynemouth Pier on a sunny morning showing a tug and two small ships passing the light.
